3.5 GPA to percentage

A 3.5 GPA is about 90% on the common 4.0 scale. Try another GPA in the box.

Short answer. A 3.5 GPA is about 90% on the common US 4.0 scale. That is between a B+ (3.3) and an A- (3.7). Schools set their own bands, so check yours.

What a 3.5 GPA is in percent

With a 3.5, your record is high for most programs. Your grades are mostly in the A- and B+ bands.

On the common US plus and minus scale, a 3.5 GPA falls between a B+ (3.3) and an A- (3.7). The B+ band is 87% to 89% and the A- band is 90% to 92%. A straight-line estimate between the middles of the two bands gives about 90%. The nearest single letter is A-.

How other methods convert 3.5

There is no single official way to turn a GPA into a percentage. These are the methods you will see most often.

The three methods give results from 88% to 90% for the same 3.5. The gap is small at this level, so most readers will see a similar number. If a school or employer asks for a percentage, use the conversion your own school prints on its transcript or grading policy.

What grades give a 3.5

For example, 5 courses at A- and 5 at B+ (all with the same credits) average 3.50, which rounds to about 3.5. Credits change the weight of each course, so a 4-credit class moves the average more than a 1-credit class.

These figures assume an unweighted 3.5. If your 3.5 is a weighted GPA that includes honors or AP points, the unweighted number behind it is lower, and so is the percent. Convert the unweighted GPA when a form asks for a percentage.

Next steps

At this level, each new A moves your average only a little. Keep the hard classes; many schools look at course choice next to the number.
