Short answer. Average grade = sum of the grades / number of grades. With weights, it is the sum of grade x weight divided by the sum of the weights.
Simple average
The simple average, or mean, treats every grade the same. Add all the grades and divide by how many there are.
Average = (grade 1 + grade 2 + ... ) / number of grades
Use this when every quiz or assignment counts the same in your class. Paste the grades with commas or spaces between them. The tool ignores anything that is not a number.
Weighted average
Often some work counts more than other work. A final exam may count twice as much as a quiz. In that case, give each grade a weight in the second box, in the same order.
Weighted average = sum of (grade x weight) / sum of weights
The weights can be any numbers. You can use 1, 1, 2 to say the third grade counts double. You can also use percents like 20, 30, 50. The tool divides by the total weight, so the weights do not need to add up to 100.
When to use which
If your syllabus gives each category a percent, such as homework 20% and tests 50%, the weighted grade calculator may be easier. It lets you enter each category as a row. This tool is best for a quick average of a list, such as all your test scores so far.
Letter grade
The letter uses the common US chart, where 93 and up is an A and 83 to 86 is a B. Schools set their own rules, so check your syllabus or school handbook.
Points or percents
Enter every grade as a percent. If a grade is in points, such as 18 out of 20, change it to a percent first (18 / 20 x 100 = 90). If you average raw points from tests with different totals, the answer will be wrong. If you want each test to count by its points, add the points and divide by the total points instead.
Worked example
Simple. Grades 88, 92 and 75. Sum = 255. Average = 255 / 3 = 85.0%, a B.
Weighted. The same grades with weights 1, 1 and 2. Sum of grade x weight = 88 + 92 + 150 = 330. Total weight = 4. Weighted average = 330 / 4 = 82.5%, a B-. The low grade counts double, so the average drops.
Questions
How do I find the average of my grades?
Add the grades and divide by how many there are. For 88, 92 and 75, the average is 255 / 3 = 85.
Do my weights have to add up to 100?
No. The tool divides by the total weight, so 1, 1, 2 works the same as 25, 25, 50.
Can I enter letter grades?
No. Enter percents. Use the GPA calculator for letter grades.
Why is my weighted average lower than my simple average?
A low grade with a high weight pulls the average down more.
Can I mix points and percents?
No. Change each grade to a percent first, or the average will be wrong.
