What do I need on the final to pass?

Put in your grade now, the lowest grade that passes, and how much the final counts. You get the score to reach.

Short answer. Needed final score = (pass mark - current grade x (1 - final weight)) / final weight. With 72% now, a final worth 30% and a 60% pass mark, you need 32% on the final.

Find the pass mark first

Every school sets its own pass mark. Many use 60%. Some use 70% for a C, and some programs need a C or better in core classes. Check your syllabus or ask your teacher. Use that number in the "Grade you want" box.

The calculator then works out what the final must score. If the answer is above 100, you cannot pass on the final alone. Look for extra credit or talk to your teacher early.

The formula

final = (pass mark − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w, where w is the weight of the final as a decimal. A final worth 30% has w = 0.30.

Worked example

Example. You have 72% now. The final is worth 30%. The pass mark is 60%.

Final = (60 − 72 × 0.70) ÷ 0.30 = (60 − 50.4) ÷ 0.30 = 32%. You need only 32% on the final to pass.

If the pass mark is 70%, you need (70 − 50.4) ÷ 0.30 = 65.3%.

Questions

Can I fail the final and still pass the class?

Yes, if your grade now is high enough. The calculator shows the lowest final score that still passes. In the example, 32% is enough.

What if the answer is more than 100%?

Then the pass mark is out of reach with the final alone. Ask about extra credit, a retake or dropping a low score.

Does a pass mark of 60% apply to every school?

No. Some schools pass at 50%, some at 70%. Read your syllabus.
