IISc CGPA to percentage

IISc has two CGPA scales. Choose yours and enter the CGPA.

Short answer. An IISc notification of 14 October 2021 says: multiply a 10-point CGPA by 10, or an 8-point CGPA by 12.5. It calls this a notional conversion. A 10-point CGPA of 8.4 gives 84%.

The official formula

Percentage = 10 x CGPA on the 10-point scale, or 12.5 x CGPA on the 8-point scale

The notification gives two rules. On the 10-point scale, multiply the CGPA by 10 to get the percentage. On the 8-point scale, multiply the CGPA by 12.5. Both are called a notional conversion, and the notification repeats that grade points are not convertible into percentage at IISc.

Where it comes from

The notification is Ref. No. IISc/Acad/CGPA-Conversion/2021, dated 14 October 2021. It says the IISc Senate approved the formula at its meeting of 11 November 2019, and the Governing Council noted it on 21 December 2019. IISc issued it because students and outside agencies kept asking for a percentage.

Who it applies to

The 10-point system applies to students who joined from the academic year starting in August 2016. The 8-point scale applies to students who joined before that and continue on it.

How to use the tool

Type your CGPA in the box. Pick the formula that matches your scheme first. The tool shows the percentage and a short table of nearby values. Always compare the answer with your marksheet or a certificate from the IISc office, because only they can give the official figure.

Things to watch

The notification says no individual certificate or letter will be issued on this matter. The notification itself is the reference you can quote.

IISc is an institute, not a university with affiliated colleges. This page is only for IISc CGPA.

On the 8-point scale, a CGPA of 8 gives 100%. The 12.5 multiplier stretches the smaller scale.

Going the other way

Forms often ask for a minimum percentage. Under the IISc rule on this page, 60% needs a CGPA of about 6.00; 70% needs a CGPA of about 7.00; 75% needs a CGPA of about 7.50. These are plain reversals of the formula. They show what CGPA you would need to clear a percentage cut-off, but the form may ask for the university's own certificate.

How it compares

At a CGPA of 8.4, the IISc rule gives 84%. For the same number, CBSE gives 79.8%, VTU gives 76.5%, JNTUH gives 79%. The spread is the reason to use only the rule of the body that gave you the CGPA. Our CGPA to percentage hub lists every rule we have checked.

Worked example

Example. A IISc student has a CGPA of 8.4.

10 x 8.4 = 84.00%.

Questions

Why does IISc say the conversion is notional?

The notification says grade points awarded are not convertible into percentage. The formula exists only to meet outside requests.

Can I get a certificate with my percentage?

The notification says no individual certificate or letter will be issued on this matter.

How do I know which scale I am on?

The notification ties the 10-point scale to students who joined from August 2016. Earlier joiners are on the 8-point scale.

Is this the official IISc conversion?

It follows the document linked on this page, which we read on 2026-10-10. For a certificate or a form that needs the official figure, ask the IISc office.

Can I use the IISc formula for another university?

No. Each board and university sets its own rule. At a CGPA of 8.0 the rules in this series give anything from 69% to 85%. Use the page for your own university.

What if my marksheet shows both a CGPA and a percentage?

Use the percentage on the marksheet. It is the university's own figure, and it overrides any conversion from a tool.
