KCSE mean grade calculator

Enter your KCSE grades. The tool picks the best seven subjects and gives your total points and mean grade.

Short answer. KCSE counts your best seven subjects: Mathematics, the better of English or Kiswahili, and the five highest others. Add the points (A = 12 down to E = 1). The total, out of 84, gives the mean grade. For example, 64 points is a B.

How the KCSE mean grade works

KCSE gives each subject a grade from A to E. Each grade is worth points. A is 12 points, A- is 11, B+ is 10, B is 9, B- is 8, C+ is 7, C is 6, C- is 5, D+ is 4, D is 3, D- is 2 and E is 1.

You may sit eight or nine subjects. Only seven count toward the mean grade. Mathematics always counts. English or Kiswahili counts too, whichever you scored higher in. Then the five best of your other subjects fill the remaining places. Your other language can compete for one of those five places.

Add the points of the seven subjects. The highest total is 84. Then read the mean grade from the total.

The tool marks each subject as counted or not counted, so you can see which grades drive the total. A grade of C+ or better is the usual line for university placement. Check the current cluster rules of KUCCPS for your course, because courses also ask for grades in set subjects.

This page uses the 12-point scale that KNEC has used for years. Reports in 2025 describe changes to the grading structure under the new curriculum. The change does not alter the old KCSE sums on this page, but check KNEC notices if you sit a newer exam.

How to use the result

Start with the grades on your result slip. Type each one next to its subject. The status column shows which seven count. If a subject shows Not counted, a better grade is in use. Try changing a grade to see how the total moves. One grade step is worth one point, and seven points make one mean grade band.

This helps when you plan a retake or a course choice. Find the next band line, then see how many points you need. If you are two points short of B, one grade up in two subjects can close the gap.

Worked example

Example. Mathematics B+ (10), English B (9), Kiswahili C+ (7), Biology B (9), Chemistry B- (8), Physics C+ (7), Geography B+ (10), Business A- (11).

Mathematics counts (10). English counts, since it beats Kiswahili (9). The five best of the rest are Business 11, Geography 10, Biology 9, Chemistry 8 and one 7. Total: 10 + 9 + 11 + 10 + 9 + 8 + 7 = 64. That falls in 60-66, so the mean grade is B. The average is 9.14 points.

Questions

How many subjects count in KCSE?

What is the highest KCSE total?

84. That is seven subjects at 12 points each, which is straight A grades.

What mean grade do I need for university?

C+ is the usual minimum for university placement. Each course also sets cluster subject points, so check the current rules for your course.

Why is my total different from my result slip?

Check that you entered each grade correctly. Also check KNEC notices, because the rules can change for newer exams.
