Syllable counter

Type or paste your text. You get the syllables for each line and the total.

Short answer. A syllable is one beat of sound with one vowel sound. Paste text and the tool counts syllables per line and in total. The count is an estimate for unusual words.

How it counts

A syllable is one beat of sound in a word. Cat has one. Beautiful has three.

The tool looks each word up in a pronunciation dictionary and counts its vowel sounds. If a word is not in the dictionary, it makes a careful estimate from the spelling and tells you.

Each line of your text gets its own count. This helps with a haiku (5, 7 and 5 syllables) or with lines of a song.

Worked example

Example. "An old silent pond" has 5 syllables. "A frog jumps into the pond" has 7. "Splash! Silence again" has 5.

Questions

Why can a word have two different counts?

Some words are said in more than one way. Every can be two or three syllables. The tool uses the most common reading.

Do numbers and symbols count?

No. Only letters are counted. Write numbers as words, such as twenty, if you want them counted.

Can I use it for a haiku?

Yes. Put each line on its own row and check for 5, 7 and 5.
