VTU CGPA to percentage

Enter your VTU CGPA. The tool subtracts 0.75 and multiplies by 10, as the VTU regulation states.

Short answer. The VTU regulations for BE and B.Tech (2018-19 scheme, clause 18OB 7.1) give Percentage = (CGPA - 0.75) x 10. A CGPA of 8.20 gives 74.5%.

The official formula

Percentage = (CGPA - 0.75) x 10

Clause 18OB 7.1 reads: percentage of marks secured, P = (CGPA earned - 0.75) x 10. The regulation shows an illustration. For a CGPA of 8.20, P = (8.20 - 0.75) x 10 = 74.5%.

Where it comes from

The clause sits in the VTU regulations governing the degree of Bachelor of Engineering and Technology under Outcome Based Education and Choice Based Credit System, effective from the academic year 2018-19. Clause 18OB 7.0 is titled Conversions of CGPA into Percentage of Marks and Class Equivalence.

Who it applies to

This applies to students under that 2018-19 regulation. Other VTU schemes may have their own text. We could confirm only the 2018-19 clause, so check the regulation for your scheme.

How to use the tool

Type your CGPA in the box. The tool shows the percentage and a short table of nearby values. Always compare the answer with your marksheet or a certificate from the VTU office, because only they can give the official figure.

Things to watch

Clause 18OB 7.2 links the percentage to the class. First Class with Distinction needs P of 70% or more. First Class needs 60% or more but below 70%. Second Class is below 60%.

Because of the 0.75 subtraction, a CGPA of 0.75 or less gives 0%. For normal passing CGPAs this does not matter.

Many websites quote this formula for all VTU students. We tested it only against the 2018-19 text.

Going the other way

Forms often ask for a minimum percentage. Under the VTU rule on this page, 60% needs a CGPA of about 6.75; 70% needs a CGPA of about 7.75; 75% needs a CGPA of about 8.25. These are plain reversals of the formula. They show what CGPA you would need to clear a percentage cut-off, but the form may ask for the university's own certificate.

How it compares

At a CGPA of 8.2, the VTU rule gives 74.5%. For the same number, CBSE gives 77.9%, JNTUH gives 77%. The spread is the reason to use only the rule of the body that gave you the CGPA. Our CGPA to percentage hub lists every rule we have checked.

Worked example

Example. A VTU student has a CGPA of 8.2.

(8.2 - 0.75) x 10 = 74.50%.

Questions

Which CGPA gives First Class with Distinction at VTU?

The regulation says P of 70% or more. Solving (CGPA - 0.75) x 10 = 70 gives a CGPA of 7.75. So 7.75 and above reach that line under this clause.

Does VTU use this for the SGPA too?

The clause we read speaks of the CGPA earned. We do not claim it applies to a single semester SGPA.

Is a CGPA of 10 equal to 100%?

No. (10 - 0.75) x 10 = 92.5%. The formula never gives 100% for a CGPA of 10.

Is this the official VTU conversion?

It follows the document linked on this page, which we read on 2026-10-10. For a certificate or a form that needs the official figure, ask the VTU office.

Can I use the VTU formula for another university?

No. Each board and university sets its own rule. At a CGPA of 8.0 the rules in this series give anything from 69% to 85%. Use the page for your own university.

What if my marksheet shows both a CGPA and a percentage?

Use the percentage on the marksheet. It is the university's own figure, and it overrides any conversion from a tool.
