Short answer. A word unscrambler lists every valid word you can make from a set of letters. Type the letters and read the list, longest words first.
How it works
The tool checks each word in the list against your letters. A word counts if you have enough of each letter to spell it. A letter you have once can be used once.
Type ? for a blank tile. A blank can stand for any letter. Use the Starts with and Ends with boxes to narrow the list, for example to find a word that begins with the letters already on a board.
The words come from the ENABLE list, a public-domain word list used in many word games. Other dictionaries differ a little, so a game may accept or reject a few words that this list does not.
Worked example
Example. The letters tca make these words: act, cat (3 letters) and at, ta (2 letters).
Questions
How many letters can I use?
Up to 15, including blanks. More letters than that give very long lists that are hard to use.
What does the question mark do?
It stands for any one letter, like a blank tile. Each ? adds one more letter that a word may use.
Why does a word from my game not show up?
Games use different word lists. This one is the public-domain ENABLE list. Very new words and some names are not in it.
