Short answer. At a 75% rule you must attend three of every four classes. You can miss at most one third as many classes as you attended. At 36 of 40 you can miss 8 more and still end at 75%.
Why 75% comes up so often
A 75% minimum is easy to say. You must attend three of every four classes. Many institutions use it. The examples below come from published rules.
What 75% means in classes
Three of every four classes is the same as missing at most one in four. Over 40 classes, you may miss up to 10 and still end at exactly 75%. Over 100 classes, you may miss up to 25.
The key point is that the sum is on the total held, not on the classes left. If you miss early, the later classes must make up for it.
The quick rule
To stay at 75% or above, your misses must be at most one third of your attended classes. If you attended 30, you can have 10 misses. If you attended 36, you can have 12.
To climb back from below 75%, you need to attend three classes for each extra class you have missed past the limit. Each class you attend then lifts the percent by a little less each time as you get close.
Condonation
Some institutions allow a student below 75% to sit the exam with a valid reason. Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, for example, sets a lower band of 60% to 74% for this, with proof and a fee. Jamia Millia Islamia allows a relaxation of up to 10% for illness or approved activities. These are rules of those schools only. Do not assume yours is the same.
Rules from real institutions
There is no single attendance rule. Each university or college sets its own. These examples come from rules the institutions publish. Rules change, so read the current text for your own school. Checked on 2026-10-10.
- Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi: at least 75% in lectures and tutorials, and separately 75% in practicals or field work. Up to 10% relaxation can be given for serious illness or approved activities. Source: JMI ordinance.
- Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Tirunelveli: 75% in a course. Students at 60% to 74% may sit the exam with a valid reason and a fee. Below 60%, the course must be repeated. Source: MSU condonation rules.
- NUML, Islamabad: 75% attendance, counted subject by subject, for degree level programmes. Source: NUML attendance SOP.
- University of Buner, Pakistan: at least 75% of the lectures in each course to appear in the exams. Source: University of Buner page.

Worked example
Example. 27 attended out of 40 held. Target 75%.
Now: 27 / 40 = 67.5%. Attend 12 classes in a row. Check: (27 + 12) / (40 + 12) = 39 / 52 = 75.0%.
Questions
Is 75% attendance a law?
No single law sets it for all schools. It is a rule that many institutions choose. Each one writes its own regulation, so read the one for your school.
How many classes can I miss out of 60 at 75%?
Out of 60 held classes, you must attend 45. So you can miss up to 15. The tool shows the number for any count you enter.
What if I am at 74%?
That is below the line. If you are at 74 of 100, you need 4 more classes in a row to reach 78 of 104, which is 75%. Use the tool for your exact numbers.
Do medical leaves count as present?
That depends on the school. Some record medical days as absent but allow condonation with a certificate. Others count approved leave as present. Ask your office.
Does 75% apply to every subject or to the total?
Both versions exist. NUML in Islamabad, for example, states its 75% rule subject by subject. Check whether your school uses a subject rule or a total rule.
Can I round up 74.5% to 75%?
Only if your school's rule says so. Most schools do not round. Treat 75% as a hard line unless your handbook says otherwise.
