80% attendance calculator

Some programmes set an 80% minimum. Enter your classes and see how much room you have.

Short answer. At an 80% rule you may miss one class in five. At 30 of 40 you are exactly at 80%, and the next miss drops you below it. To go from 28 of 40 to 80% you need 20 classes in a row.

What an 80% rule asks

An 80% minimum means you may miss one class in five. That is tighter than 75%. Over 50 classes you may miss 10. Over 100 classes you may miss 20.

Why the gap between 75% and 80% matters

The step from 75% to 80% looks small. In practice, it removes a lot of room. At 40 held classes, a 75% rule lets you skip 10. An 80% rule lets you skip 8. The difference grows with the length of the term.

The repair cost also rises. If you are at 28 of 40, you need 8 straight attended classes to reach 75%. To reach 80% you need 20. (28 + 20) / (40 + 20) = 48 / 60 = 80%.

Where 80% appears

This is a minimum in some places, not the usual one. CIPET in India states 80% per subject for its semester exams, and a small committee can review cases between 65% and 80%. Fatima College (Autonomous) in Madurai states 80% per semester. NUML in Islamabad uses 75% in general, but sets 80% for Pak Armed Forces sponsored personnel. Rules like these can change, so read your own current text.

Using the tool well

Put your latest counts in the first two boxes. The target box is already at 80. Add the classes left in the term if you know them. The tool then tells you how many of those you must attend.

Check the result early in the term. A miss in week two is cheap to fix. A miss in week twelve may not be fixable at all.

Rules from real institutions

There is no single attendance rule. Each university or college sets its own. These examples come from rules the institutions publish. Rules change, so read the current text for your own school. Checked on 2026-10-10.

  • CIPET (India): at least 80% in each subject to appear in the semester exam. A small committee can review cases from 65% to below 80%. Source: CIPET attendance SOP.
  • Fatima College (Autonomous), Madurai: 80% attendance per semester to take the semester exam. Source: Fatima College rules.

Worked example

Example. 30 attended out of 40 held. Target 80%.

Now: 30 / 40 = 75.0%. Attend 10 classes in a row. Check: (30 + 10) / (40 + 10) = 40 / 50 = 80.0%.

Questions

How many classes can I miss out of 50 at 80%?

You must attend 40 of 50, so you can miss 10. The tool gives the number for any count you enter.

Is 80% harder than 75%?

Yes. You may miss one class in five, not one in four. Fewer misses are allowed, and recovery needs more attended classes in a row.

Which schools use an 80% rule?

Some do. The sources on this page list CIPET and Fatima College, Madurai, as published examples. Most schools use 75%, so check yours.

Can I reach 80% if I am at 60%?

Yes, if enough classes remain. At 24 of 40 you need 40 attended classes in a row to reach 64 of 80. The optional box shows if the term is long enough.

Does the 80% apply to total hours or to each subject?

It depends on the school. CIPET states it subject by subject. Fatima College states it per semester. Read your own rule.

What if the school gives relief for illness?

Relief rules differ. CIPET describes a review committee for cases between 65% and 80%. Keep your medical papers and apply early.
