GPA scale converter

Pick the scale you have. Type your number. See it as a percentage, a 4.0 GPA and a 10-point CGPA.

Short answer. Percent, 4.0 GPA and 10-point CGPA are different scales. A common guide: 85% is about a 3.0 on the 4.0 scale and about 8.9 on the 10-point scale (percent = CGPA x 9.5).

Why scales differ

Countries and schools grade in different ways. The United States often uses a 4.0 GPA. India often uses percent or a 10-point CGPA. The UK uses degree classes. A number from one system does not map cleanly to another. This tool gives a fair guide for forms, plans and quick checks.

How each conversion works

Percent to 4.0. The tool finds the letter band for your percent. It uses the common US chart: 93 to 100 is an A (4.0), 90 to 92 is an A- (3.7), 87 to 89 is a B+ (3.3), and so on down to F below 60.

4.0 to percent. A GPA often falls between two bands. The tool finds the band below and the band above. Then it draws a straight line between their mid-points. The answer is marked with a tilde (~) because it is an estimate.

Percent and 10-point CGPA. The tool uses the CBSE rule: percent = CGPA x 9.5. To go back, it divides percent by 9.5. The result is capped at 10.

UK class guide. The tool gives a rough label from the 4.0 value. 3.7 or more is a First. 3.3 to 3.69 is an Upper second (2:1). 2.7 to 3.29 is a Lower second (2:2). 2.0 to 2.69 is a Third. Anything lower is below honors level. Real UK classes depend on the weighted mark of your whole degree, not on this chart.

When to be careful

Do not use a converted number on an official form unless the receiver accepts it. Many universities and credential services have their own tables. A service such as WES or a school's admissions office can give the official result. Schools set their own rules, so check your own school handbook.

Worked example

Example 1. You scored 85%. On the common chart, 85% sits in the B band (83 to 86), so the GPA is 3.0. On the 10-point scale, 85 / 9.5 = 8.947, which rounds to 8.9. The UK guide for a 3.0 is a Lower second (2:2).

Example 2. You have a 3.5 GPA. It falls between B+ (3.3, mid-point 88) and A- (3.7, mid-point 91). The gap is 0.4 GPA points and 3 percent points. You are 0.2 above B+, which is half the gap. So percent = 88 + 0.5 x 3 = 89.5% (shown as ~89.5%). The 10-point value is 89.5 / 9.5 = 9.4.

Example 3. You have an 8.0 CGPA. Percent = 8 x 9.5 = 76%. That is a C (73 to 76), so the GPA is 2.0.

Questions

Is the 9.5 rule exact?

No. It is the rule used by CBSE in India. Other boards and universities use other rules, and some use a table.

Why does my GPA give a range of percent?

One GPA covers a whole band. A 3.0 means 83 to 86 percent. The tool shows one point inside the band as an estimate.

Is the UK class result official?

No. It is a rough guide. Your university sets the real class from your marks and its own rules.

Can a converted GPA go above 4.0?

Not here. Some schools use a weighted 5.0 scale, but this tool uses the plain 4.0 scale.

Which scale should I put on my application?

Use the scale on your own record. If a form asks for a conversion, read its instructions or ask the office.

What if my school uses a 4.3 scale?

Then an A+ may count 4.3. This converter stops at 4.0, so use your school's own chart for exact work.
