Short answer. Malaysian CGPA = total quality points divided by total credit hours. Quality points are the grade point (A = 4.00, A- = 3.67, B+ = 3.33, B = 3.00) times the credit hours. First Class usually starts at 3.67.
How Malaysian CGPA works
Most Malaysian universities use a 4.00 scale with credit hours. Each course grade has a grade point. Multiply the grade point by the credit hours to get quality points. Add the quality points for the term and divide by the credit hours. That is your GPA for the term. CGPA does the same sum over all terms.
| Grade | Point | Grade | Point |
|---|---|---|---|
| A+, A | 4.00 | C | 2.00 |
| A- | 3.67 | C- | 1.67 |
| B+ | 3.33 | D+ | 1.33 |
| B | 3.00 | D | 1.00 |
| B- | 2.67 | D- | 0.67 |
| C+ | 2.33 | E | 0.00 |
This table follows the official UTM transcript. UPM publishes the same points from A+ to C+ and gives D as 1.00 and F as 0.00. UiTM and other universities publish their own tables. I did not verify the UiTM table. Check your faculty handbook before you trust a number from any calculator.
Class of degree uses the CGPA. First Class needs 3.67 or more. Second Upper runs from 3.00 to 3.66. The lower bands differ by university. A UTM transcript lists Second Lower from 2.00 to 2.99. UPM rules show Second Lower from 2.50 and Third Class from 2.00. The tool has a switch for these two sets.
To add earlier terms, type your earlier CGPA and the credit hours it covers. The tool adds them to the new term. If you retake a course, many public universities keep the newest grade for the CGPA. Remove the old attempt from the list.
How to use the result
Use the term fields if you only want a semester GPA. Leave the earlier CGPA boxes empty. Use both if you want the new CGPA after this semester. Try a few possible grades for the courses still to come, and watch how the CGPA moves. The effect is small when your earlier credit hours are high.
Keep to the rules of your own university for pass, fail and repeat courses. Courses taken as pass or fail normally have no grade point, so leave them out.

Worked example
Example. A- (3 credit hours), B+ (3), B (4), A (2), C+ (3).
Quality points: 11.01 + 9.99 + 12.00 + 8.00 + 6.99 = 47.99. Credit hours: 15. GPA: 47.99 / 15 = 3.20.
Earlier CGPA 3.40 over 60 credit hours gives 204.00 points. New total: 251.99 / 75 = 3.36. That is Second Upper on both band sets.
Questions
What is the difference between GPA and CGPA?
GPA covers one semester. CGPA covers all semesters so far.
What CGPA gives First Class?
3.67 and above at UTM and UPM. Other universities may set their own line.
Do UiTM and UPM use the same table?
They use similar 4.00 scales, but each publishes its own table and rules. I checked UTM and UPM. I did not verify UiTM, so use its handbook.
What happens if I retake a course?
Many public universities keep the newest grade in the CGPA. Remove the old attempt from the list if yours does.
Is A+ worth more than A?
In the tables checked here, both are 4.00. A+ shows on the transcript only.
