WASSCE aggregate calculator

Enter three core grades and your electives. The tool adds your best six and gives the aggregate.

Short answer. The WASSCE aggregate adds the values of six grades: three core subjects and your best three electives. A1 counts 1 and F9 counts 9. A low number is better. Six A1 grades give 6.

How the WASSCE aggregate works

WASSCE grades run from A1 to F9. The number in the grade is its value in the aggregate. So A1 counts 1, B2 counts 2, B3 counts 3, C4 counts 4, C5 counts 5, C6 counts 6, D7 counts 7, E8 counts 8 and F9 counts 9. A low aggregate is good.

GradeValueMeaning
A11Excellent
B22Very good
B33Good
C4, C5, C64, 5, 6Credit
D7, E87, 8Weak pass
F99Fail

The aggregate uses six subjects. Three are core subjects: English Language, Core Mathematics, and Integrated Science or Social Studies. The other three are your best elective subjects. Add the six values. Six A1 grades give 6, the best possible aggregate. Six C6 grades give 36.

Universities set a ceiling for the aggregate. One public university in Ghana lists a maximum of 24 for some entry routes and 30 for another. Each programme also asks for credits (C6 or better) in set subjects. A low aggregate does not help if a required subject is missing.

The tool takes your best three electives from the grades you enter. Enter all electives you took. If you pick a weak elective by mistake, the tool still drops it when you have better ones.

Some schools or programmes use a different set of core subjects, such as both Integrated Science and Social Studies. If your programme does, follow its own list and add the values by hand.

How to use the result

Type the grades from your result slip. Pick the core grades first, then every elective you took. The tool drops the weaker electives for you. Change a grade to see how much one step changes the total. Each step is one point of aggregate.

Compare the answer with the cut-off of the programme you want. Cut-offs change each year, and popular courses often ask for a lower number than the published limit. Read the admissions page of the school for the current year.

Worked example

Example. Core: English B3 (3), Core Mathematics C4 (4), Integrated Science B2 (2). Total core: 9.

Electives: Economics B3 (3), Geography C4 (4), Government B2 (2), Literature C6 (6), CRS C5 (5), Accounting C4 (4). The best three are B2, B3 and one C4, which add to 2 + 3 + 4 = 9.

Aggregate: 9 + 9 = 18.

Questions

Is a high or low aggregate better?

Low is better. The best aggregate is 6, from six A1 grades.

What is the worst aggregate?

54 if every grade is F9. In practice, a university looks for credits, which means C6 or better, so the useful range is 6 to 36.

Which aggregate do universities want?

It varies. One public university lists a maximum of 24 for some routes and 30 for another. Check the programme you want.

Do D7 and E8 count as passes?

They are weak passes. Most universities do not accept them as credits in required subjects.

Which core subject do I enter as the third one?

Enter Integrated Science for science programmes or Social Studies for other programmes, as your programme asks.
