Short answer. GTU Notification 1/2012, dated 13 April 2012, gives Percentage Marks = (CPI/CGPA - 0.5) x 10. A CPI of 7.4 gives 69%.
The official formula
Percentage = (CPI/CGPA - 0.5) x 10
Item 4 of the notification is headed Formula for conversion of equivalent percentage of CPI. It states: Percentage Marks = (CPI/CGPA - 0.5) x 10. The same item sets the class bands: below 5.5 is pass class, 5.5 and above is second class, 6.5 and above is first class, and 7.1 and above is first class with distinction.
Where it comes from
The notification is numbered GTU/Notification/2012/3970 and dated 13 April 2012, signed by the I/c Registrar. It records resolutions of the GTU Academic Council and says they take effect from the winter exam of 2011. The PDF is linked from the Student Support Section of the GTU website.

Who it applies to
The notification does not limit the formula to one course. It applies to GTU results from the winter 2011 exam onward. Item 5 of the same notice says degrees for courses longer than two years use the CGPA of the last four semesters, and two-year courses use the CPI of all four semesters.
How to use the tool
Type your CGPA in the box. The tool shows the percentage and a short table of nearby values. Always compare the answer with your marksheet or a certificate from the GTU office, because only they can give the official figure.
Things to watch
For an official figure, GTU issues a Rank and Percentage Conversion Certificate. You apply on the GTU student portal, and the Student Support Section posts it to you.
Use CGPA or CPI as your degree uses it. For a four-year degree, GTU uses the CGPA of the last four semesters, not the CPI of all eight.
At a CGPA of 8.0 this rule gives 75%, the same as JNTUH and DBATU.
Going the other way
Forms often ask for a minimum percentage. Under the GTU rule on this page, 60% needs a CGPA of about 6.50; 70% needs a CGPA of about 7.50; 75% needs a CGPA of about 8.00. These are plain reversals of the formula. They show what CGPA you would need to clear a percentage cut-off, but the form may ask for the university's own certificate.
How it compares
At a CGPA of 7.4, the GTU rule gives 69%. For the same number, CBSE gives 70.3%, VTU gives 66.5%, JNTUH gives 69%. The spread is the reason to use only the rule of the body that gave you the CGPA. Our CGPA to percentage hub lists every rule we have checked.
Worked example
Example. A GTU student has a CGPA of 7.4.
(7.4 - 0.5) x 10 = 69.00%.
Questions
What is the GTU CGPA to percentage formula?
GTU Notification 1/2012 gives Percentage = (CPI/CGPA - 0.5) x 10. A CGPA of 8.0 gives 75%.
What CPI is first class with distinction at GTU?
The same notification gives 7.1 and above. That is about 66%.
How do I get the GTU percentage conversion certificate?
Apply for the Rank and Percentage Conversion Certificate on the GTU student portal. Upload your degree, provisional certificate or last grade sheet and a photo ID. GTU sends it by post.
Is this the official GTU conversion?
It follows the document linked on this page, which we read on 2026-10-10. For a certificate or a form that needs the official figure, ask the GTU office.
Can I use the GTU formula for another university?
No. Each board and university sets its own rule. At a CGPA of 8.0 the rules in this series give anything from 69% to 85%. Use the page for your own university.
What if my marksheet shows both a CGPA and a percentage?
Use the percentage on the marksheet. It is the university's own figure, and it overrides any conversion from a tool.
